Public Storage!

If you are moving across town or even relocating to a far away city, chances are good that you may have to put some of your belongings in a public storage facility. You may be moving into a smaller dwelling or you might be moving into some type of temporary housing until your permanent residence is ready for you. Whatever the reason, many people find that at one time or another, they need to use public storage. Although putting your possessions in a storage unit may seem like a fairly straight forward deal, using public storage can also be a nightmare. Your stuff can get damaged or stolen. Choosing the right public storage facility therefore becomes a top priority.

Using Public Storage!

Just about anything could happen to your belongings while they are in self-storage. Choosing the right public storage facility is important and it is also important that you pack your items in the self storage unit correctly.

Choosing a Public Storage Facility

You may want to try to find a public storage facility that is close to where you are going to live. Many people find that they need to go to their self storage unit on a regular basis. After all, the items that you store there were previously located in your home. You might find that you need that blender after all. Your temporary housing may turn into a more semi-permanent housing situation and you might find that you need certain items that you previously thought you could live without.

Public storage units come in all different sizes. You will need to choose a size that works for you financially as well as spatially. Keep in mind that you can pack quite a bit into a smaller unit. You can stack your stuff in your storage unit just like you would stack it in a moving truck. Just remember that the longer your belongings sit in storage, the more they will shift. You will want to make sure that your boxes and other items are stacked in a secure fashion.

You might also want to think about climate control. It may be worth the extra expense to choose a public storage unit that has this feature, especially if the storage facility is located in a climate that has extreme temperatures. This is important if you are storing any valuable items or important documents.

Packing Your Storage Unit

You will want to stack boxes that are of equal size on top of one another with the sturdiest and heaviest boxes at the bottom. Be sure to leave a walkway all the way to the back of your storage unit so that you will have easy access to your belongings if you need to come back and get something out. You can also leave a small space between your items and the walls of your storage unit. This will help to protect your items from humidity and mildew.

Keeping Your Belongings Secure

Make sure that the public storage facility you choose has a good security system with regular patrols. If you have the option of putting a padlock on your door then don't skimp. Get the best lock that you can afford. Try to place your most valuable items toward the back of the storage unit. When thieves break into public storage units they are usually in a hurry and will typically just grab what they can get at first. Also make sure that your valuable belongings are insured. Hopefully nothing will go wrong but if it does, at least you will be covered for any losses that may occur.

Final Word: Do make a checklist and start organizing your move as early as possible!
