If you want to avoid using a moving service then you can start out by doing some free research on the internet. After all, it doesn't cost any money to access most web pages (yet). Then you can go to your local grocery store or warehouse and ask if they have any extra boxes. You can accumulate enough boxes to facilitate your move and then begin packing up your possessions. Using your own pickup truck, and maybe asking a few friends who also have trucks for some help, you can then pack up the trucks and head off to your new location. You might have to buy some food and drinks for your friends and you will have to buy the gas for the trucks but think of all the money you can save by avoiding the moving services that charge a fee!

Unfortunately, this scenario does not work well for everyone. You may be getting older or you may have already been through enough moves that you have learned that moving is just not all that much fun... and it's a load of work. The above mentioned process does not work well for people who are relocating to a different state or for longer moves in general. In those cases, most people will opt for some paid help. If it is a very long move or an out of state move then using a moving company usually makes more sense than trying to do it yourself. If you have the resources and the time then renting a truck and also hiring some help may be your best option.
